Storage budgets for tenants with color-coded warnings

November 9, 2026
An individual storage budget can be assigned to each tenant. Color-coded indicators show usage and warn when storage space is running low. Uploads that would exceed the budget are prevented.

The Tenants app now includes storage budget management. Administrators can define a shared default and assign a different budget to individual tenants as needed. Unlimited storage is also supported.

Each tenant has its own budget. Storage used by subtenants with their own budgets is not counted toward their parent tenant’s usage.

The Tenants app shows the storage space used and the available budget. A color-coded indicator highlights usage:

  • Below 80%, no warning message appears.
  • At 80% or above, an orange indicator warns that the budget is nearly exhausted.
  • At 100% or above, the indicator turns red.

The upload dialog also considers how much storage space the selected files require. If an upload would exceed the budget, it is prevented. A message indicates the available storage space and advises deleting files that are no longer needed or selecting fewer files.

When the budget is fully exhausted, a notice also appears when opening a gallery. Click “Understood, continue to gallery” to continue using the gallery. New uploads are only possible once sufficient storage space is available again. Existing content can still be edited at any time.

Note: The Tenants app is only available to users with the “Root administrator” role.

  1. Open the Tenants app from the Launchpad and select the desired tenant.
  2. Switch to Storage budget & upload.
  3. Click the pencil icon next to “Individual storage budget”.
  4. Select “Custom value”.
  5. Under “Storage budget in GB”, enter the desired value, for example 10 for 10 GB. Whole numbers and values with one decimal place, such as 0.5, are supported.
  6. Confirm the change with “OK”.

Note: The individual budget applies exclusively to this tenant. The budgets of parent tenants and subtenants remain unchanged.

Select “Use default” to remove the individual setting. The applicable inherited or system-wide default will then apply. Select “Unlimited” to disable the limit exclusively for the selected tenant.

Under Settings for subtenants, the “Default storage budget” setting defines the default budget for the selected tenant and each of its subtenants, unless a different setting applies.

To edit it, click the pencil icon, select “Custom value”, enter the budget in GB and confirm with “OK”.

Example: You can set a default of 2 GB. Each affected tenant then receives its own budget of 2 GB, rather than a share of a common budget. For an individual tenant requiring more space, you can additionally set an “Individual storage budget” of 10 GB.

The Storage budget & upload section displays “Size (exclusive)” and “Size (including subtenants)”. The exclusive size determines usage against the tenant’s own budget. The second value also includes storage used by subtenants.

Note: The upload restriction encourages responsible use of the available storage space. It checks the budget when new files are uploaded but does not provide a comprehensive limit on all storage-related actions in OpenCms.
