Typographic quotation marks in texts

Entering typographically correct quotation marks in text fields or in the editor has been made easier.

In typewriting, there is only one character (") for both opening and closing quotation marks. However, the use of this straight quotation mark in German texts is considered typographically incorrect.

“This is not correct.”

Instead, the typographically correct form is to use curved quotation marks – one at the bottom and one at the top.

 „This is correct.“

However, the lack of corresponding keys on standard German keyboards is a disadvantage when entering typographically correct quotation marks.

Starting with version 24-09, OpenCms offers functions that facilitate or automate the entry of typographical quotation marks.

  • In plain text fields (without formatting), straight quotation marks entered in the form editor are automatically converted to typographic quotation marks.
    • This automatic conversion can be disabled if desired.
  • There is a new button [ “ ] in the WYSIWYG editor. When this button is pressed, all straight quotation marks in the current WYSIWYG field are converted to typographic quotation marks.
