RSS feeds for registration with Google News

With version 23-09, lists of Mercury articles can be output not only on websites but also as RSS feeds. RSS feeds are a search engine optimization technique recommended by Google that can be used to ensure that press releases, for example, appear on Google News as quickly as possible.

Articles – just like events, people, organizations, jobs, and much more – are automatically enriched with structured data by the Mercury Template. Thanks to this structured data, articles are generally recognized as news by Google. However, they are only found through “conventional” web crawling. This has several disadvantages:

  • It can take several days for new articles to appear on Google News.
  • Google has no way of distinguishing particularly important news items – such as press releases – from other publications – such as specialist articles.

With version 23-09, an additional search engine optimization technique for articles is available alongside structured data: an RSS feed can be configured for an (existing) list of articles. If such an RSS feed is registered in the Google News Publishing Center, articles are retrieved by Google once an hour.
